#MakeoverMonday 2020 Week 28 – Penguin Size
This is my first ever Makeover Monday submission. If you aren’t familiar, Makeover Monday is a weekly social data project, hosted by Andy Kriebel and Eva Murray. Each week, a data visualization which appeared in a publication, blog, news site, etc. is chosen and participants are tasked with improving the visualization in their own creative way. You can read more about Makeover Monday and participate yourself here: https://www.makeovermonday.co.uk/.
This week’s data is on the sizes of three different penguin species and comes from Dr. Kristen Gorman and the Palmer Station, Antarctica, LTER. You can read more about the data here: https://github.com/allisonhorst/palmerpenguins.
This is the original visualization:
In my revision, I added two bar charts in addition to the scatter plot in an attempt to highlight the key differences in size between the three species. Additionally, I added the ability to filter by the sex of the penguin, as the sizes of males and females differ quite a bit. Finally, I attempted to improve the overall aesthetics by using custom shapes and color palettes based on artwork by Allison Horst. Here is my submission:
